New report sheds light on how Gemini fits into Apple’s Siri revamp

After months of speculation, Apple has finally confirmed its partnership with Google for the highly anticipated Siri update. However, the announcement didn’t reveal many details, simply stating that the revamped Siri will be based on the Gemini platform and that its AI features “will continue to work across Apple devices and the private cloud, while maintaining Apple’s industry-leading privacy standards.” A new report has revealed further details about what this partnership might entail.

According to The Information (via 9to5Mac), Apple will use Google’s Gemini models to train the next generation of its core Siri models and will have the option to customize the Gemini model to respond in its preferred way. The report adds that Apple’s Gemini-based system may not bear any Google branding, as a project participant confirmed that the current prototype doesn’t mention Google or Gemini in its responses.

The Information also indicates that Apple intends for the Gemini-powered Siri to offer richer responses to user queries, rather than simply listing links, and to be more capable of providing emotional support. This area has always been a challenge for Siri, but the new version “will offer more comprehensive conversational responses, similar to ChatGPT and Gemini.”

Apple’s Siri updates may be rolled out in stages starting this spring.

Finally, the report sheds light on the timeline for the release of the enhanced Siri and Apple’s AI features powered by Gemini. It indicates that some features will be activated this spring, while others, such as Siri’s ability to remember past conversations or proactive suggestions—like reminding users to leave early to avoid traffic when arriving at an airport meeting point listed in Apple’s calendar—are expected to be announced during WWDC in June.

Apple has not yet announced a detailed timeline for the Siri updates. More information is expected to be revealed in the coming months as the company prepares to unveil its next round of software updates.
