A 200MP sensor might put OnePlus 16 back in the camera race later this year

The OnePlus 15 impressed many with its performance and battery life, but if there’s one thing keeping users and reviewers eager for more, it’s the cameras. After ending its partnership with Hasselblad, OnePlus compromised on the camera quality of its last flagship phone, but its successor might be able to change that.

According to Indian leaker Yogesh Brar, the next OnePlus flagship, likely to be the OnePlus 16, may feature an improved main camera. According to the leaker’s post on X, the presumed flagship may include a 200MP main sensor, a significant leap compared to the 50MP sensor in the OnePlus 15.

A 200MP camera on the OnePlus 16 could make a noticeable difference.

In addition to the main camera, the phone is said to have two 50MP cameras: one may be an ultrawide camera, and the other may offer up to 3.5x optical zoom.

Since Brar didn’t mention the sensor size, it’s unclear whether the other two sensors will represent an upgrade or a step down from the current one.

If the company improves the overall sensor sizes and finds its signature tuning that it has long lacked, the OnePlus 16 could have the best camera system in OnePlus’s flagship history.

OnePlus currently uses its DetailMax engine to compensate for the lack of better hardware, but its capabilities are limited.

Looking at other Chinese flagship phones like the Vivo X300 Pro and Find X9 Pro, we see that both feature a 200MP sensor and a periscope telephoto lens that enables high optical zoom.

The main and ultra-wide cameras on these phones have 50MP sensors. Could the OnePlus 16 adopt the same approach? I wouldn’t rule it out entirely.

Meanwhile, OnePlus appears to have canceled the OnePlus 15s, which was previously thought to be the smaller flagship in the OnePlus 15 series (similar to the OnePlus 13s).
